Opening the August calendar gave us a little jolt. There isn't a single blank day on the pop-up schedule. Sixteen pop-ups this month alone. The day reservations opened for Chiikawa Sushi, related blog posts hit 1,000, the cap of the tracker we use. Sanrio Kids Festival sold out every paid session within an hour. So, where should we start?

Today we've picked ten August pop-ups you can still visit, ranked by search volume, plus the 8 merch items that are moving right now. If you're planning events for the second half of the year, feel free to drop the table below straight into your meeting deck.

Rankings are based on Naver DataLab search trends (Naver is Korea's main search engine), comparing search volume for each pop-up's core IP keyword as of July 2026. Relative index with Chiikawa at 100: Chiikawa 100, Conan 65.2, Gintama 44.3, Hatsune Miku 37.7, TFT 29.3, Cookie Run 19.0, Mallang Festa 17.3, Hongsil Quest 7.4, Princess Connect 1.3, Guilty Gear 1.2. Keep in mind this measures IP awareness, not the pop-up itself. (Source: Naver DataLab search trends, 2026-07)

Biggest of the month

Is a game IP the biggest catch this month?

  • TFT Wild Fan Fest: Riot Games calls it the largest ever offline TFT event in Korea. It's the first single game IP to take over Sounds Forest, the flagship atrium of The Hyundai Seoul. Eight media outlets covered it the day it was announced. It runs August 7 to 17, closed on August 10 along with the department store's regular day off. (Source: Riot Games TFT official notice 2026-07-28 · Kyunghyang Games 2026-07-28)
  • Arc System Works 10th anniversary: The first reveal of limited fighting-game merch from Guilty Gear, BlazBlue and more, plus new character merch. Marking 10 years in Korea, it runs July 31 to August 13 at Yongsan I'Park Mall Living Park, 3F. (Source: Inven · Arc System Works Asia official notice)
  • Fangamer, round two: An official merch pop-up for indie games like Undertale and Stardew Valley. The merch list announcement alone pulled 160K views.
  • Back-to-back at V-Square, Konkuk: Last Origin (Jul 29-Aug 9) is followed by Princess Connect (Aug 14-30, with the schedule post at 59K views). This is the proving ground for game merch that produced the DJMAX pre-order sellout.
Takeaway: Game IP pop-ups have climbed all the way to a department store's top-tier space (Sounds Forest). Fandom spending power is being proven by the real estate it commands.

Sellout speed

The reservation wars are in character pop-ups

  • Chiikawa Sushi: The day reservations opened, related blog posts reached 1,000, the tracker's cap. The first week runs on 100% advance reservations. It's on from August 1 to 14 at Musinsa Store Seongsu (Seongsu is Seoul's pop-up district), with 22 sessions a day. (Source: Popga pop-up listings · Musinsa official content)
  • Sanrio Kids Festival: All 10 paid experience sessions sold out within 60 minutes of opening.
  • Mallang Festa in Seoul: 11 handmade squishy and stress-toy brands under one roof. Every advance-reservation slot sold out, so a walk-in waitlist was added.
  • Monchhichi Hipper x Butter Shop: Demand is spiking, with searches for Monchhichi keyrings topping 30,000 a month. Visitor reviews poured in over just two days.
Takeaway: If we're talking heat, the character side burns hotter. This is a month where "reservations open at" becomes the marketing event itself.

Anime & webtoon

Anime and webtoon IPs gather in Hongdae

  • Hongsil Quest Seoul: A hit webtoon IP from Bomtoon. The schedule notice hit 270K views, and the earlier Busan run (Jul 24-Aug 2) drew such crowds that the operator officially capped purchase quantities. The Seoul run is August 6 to 17 at Maru Building Hongdae, 1F, with entry for ages 15+ and a separate 19+ merch zone. (Source: Popga pop-up listings · Bomtoon official notice)
  • Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames: The merch preview post reached 190K views. Limitsion, which ran the Demon Slayer pop-up, is using the same format at AK Plaza Hongdae and Suwon simultaneously.
  • Detective Conan, new movie: An IP that never cools down, with over 900 reviews of the current collab cafe alone. It picks up the baton at Fanbase Hongdae after Jujutsu Kaisen (through Aug 9).
  • Hatsune Miku pop-up: Runs through August 13 on the 2nd floor of the same AK Plaza Hongdae building as Gintama. Two anime pop-ups in one building means fans naturally flow from one to the other. (Source: Popga pop-up listings)
  • Cookie Run: Kingdom special exhibition: The Pangyo leg of a touring exhibition made with intangible heritage artisans. Devsisters runs it directly, and general admission is free.
Takeaway: Hongdae is anime street all August long. The pop-up race starts before opening day, at the "merch reveal" stage.

If the merch reveal decides the pop-up, the first question is what to reveal.

Fandom and tech merch go for storage and function

Here's a one-minute rundown of the merch trends that made noise recently, by category. First, two items moving in the fandom market.

Six photocards inside a clear magnetic hard case

📸 Fandom merch

Magnetic photocard hard case: A magnetic hard case that takes a photocard in one touch. The main search term, "card shell," has risen for 13 straight months and peaked this month at 6,260 searches. A sign that photocard storage has become a baseline fandom purchase.

Digital mini album keyring: A tiny digital album that holds dozens of photos. Mega Coffee's announcement of its NCT WISH collab drew 53K views and 2.4K likes, and the newly coined term "Minilog keyring" registered search volume for the first time this month. Its official name is the "MY WISH Minilog Keyring," and it launched July 29 with album, clock and timer functions. (Source: Newsis 2026-07-14 · Courtesy of Mega MGC Coffee)

Tactile merch

Heritage and fidget merch sell on touch

Next up, items whose fun comes out when they're in your hand. Traditional motifs reworked as modern accessories, and products where the texture itself is the point, are rising together.

🎩 Heritage merch

Gat coin purse keyring: A pouch shaped like the gat, Korea's traditional horsehair hat. Unzip the brim and it becomes a coin purse. A post introducing it as a new arrival at the National Museum of Korea gift shop spread widely, and it sold out in a single day. Because it's sewn, it works well in small batches, making it a natural fit for welcome kits at global events. It retails for KRW 22,000 on the National Museum Foundation's official store and is a 2026 MU:DS design competition winner. (Source: National Museum Foundation of Korea online store)

⌨️ Fidget merch

Keycap keyring: A keyring that lifts a mechanical keyboard keycap as is. A blue switch inside gives a click every time you press it. Instagram mentions jumped 137% in February 2026 alone, and the CU Pokemon and 7-Eleven Hello Kitty collabs drew opening-day lines and sellouts. On July 27 the National Museum of Korea released a "royal seal keycap keyring" set of 4 for KRW 38,000, and the entire stock was gone right after launch. Stress relief and swappable caps are why people love it. (Source: Sometrend 2026-03-24 · Insight 2026-07-30)

LIV HEART Hamunigiri, four hamster-shaped squishy mascots that fit in your hand
ⓒLIV HEART
Official store

🧸 Character merch

Custom squishy mascot: Your mascot, made into a soft squishy plush. In Japan, LIV HEART's "Hamunigiri" is popular enough to sell out every restock, and it keeps going out of stock even at JPY 1,760 for a piece barely 6 cm tall. Village Vanguard even pre-sold limited new colors. Demand is strong for booth giveaways and fandom merch. (Source: LIV HEART official store · Village Vanguard press release)

The squishy that sells out every restock can be made with your character too.

Everyday & travel

Everyday and travel merch: practical, with one twist

Last, the practical side. Being useful isn't enough on its own, though. It needs that moment mid-use where you go, "oh, it does this too?"

Four black shoulder-strap umbrella pouches and a shot of one being worn

☂️ Everyday merch

Shoulder umbrella case: A dedicated pouch for carrying a wet umbrella over your shoulder. A new-arrival video from Standard Products drew 68K views, and searches for "umbrella pouch" hit a 12-month high during monsoon season (1,680 a month). Great as a giveaway for rainy-day and golf events.

👓 Senior merch

Magnifier nail clippers: Nail clippers with a magnifying lens above the blade. In a Daiso feature on Japanese network news, they ranked No. 3 among "items foreign visitors want to take home." A fit for welfare events and gift sets for parents.

Daiso washable travel mesh bag with straps, a mesh bag that doubles as a pouch and a laundry bag
ⓒAsung Daiso
Daiso Mall

🧳 Travel merch

Compression bag that doubles as a laundry bag: A compression pouch that squeezes down your travel clothes, and because it's mesh, you can toss the whole thing in the washer after the trip and it becomes a laundry bag. Searches for compression pouches top 5,000 a month. Daiso released a same-structure "washable travel mesh bag with straps" for KRW 5,000, with two outer pockets and one inner mesh pocket so you can sort clothes by type. A good pitch for conference and workshop welcome kits. (Source: Daiso Mall product listing)

Takeaway: Either it's fun to touch, or it turns out to have a second use. The merch selling right now is one or the other.

Compression bags go in conference welcome kits, umbrella cases go to rainy-day events. Practical merch like this sticks in memory better when it's handed out as a bundle rather than one piece at a time.

This month's conclusion

So this is what actually works

That's 16 pop-ups and 8 merch items. After going through all of them, the same points kept coming up. Let's call out just three.

☝️ One

Why is everything a keyring?: Look at the names of the 8 items again. Three of them have "keyring" in the name. Pop-ups are the same. TFT put up a limited keyring as the prize for completing the stamp rally. Why a keyring, of all things? Because once it's on a bag, it gets carried every day. And other people see it several times a day.

✌️ Two

You have to go, and you have to touch: You have to press a keycap to know what that click is. You have to squeeze a squishy to know how soft it is. A photo zone looks dull in someone else's photos but different when you're standing in front of it. Everything can be done from home, yet people still go out. Because some things don't work on a screen.

👌 Three

But merch doesn't need an IP: Opening a pop-up takes an IP. Roblox or Chiikawa, people only show up for a name they already know. Merch is a little different. Of the 8 items above, six can be made without any IP at all. The gat coin purse is a traditional motif, not a character, and the compression bag and umbrella case sell on a single "oh, this is handy." If your brand has no character and no fandom, this is where to start.

What about your brand?

What this month's 16 pop-ups share is that "the reservation is the buzz." Sold out 60 minutes after opening, blog posts hitting the tracker's cap. Half the pop-up battle is over before the doors open. If you're planning an event, design the reservation launch itself as an event, and give people a reason to show up with venue-exclusive merch.

If choosing the merch items is where you're stuck, O-SEAN will work it out with you, starting from the trending items above.
